It started at a wedding.

OYA didn't begin in a boardroom. It began in Franschhoek, at the wedding of two close friends. They had asked me to officiate, so I found myself wearing two hats that day: priest and guest.
The bride, Jo, had once worked with a non-alcoholic drink containing sceletium — an indigenous South African botanical known for its naturally calming properties. A few cans were sitting on the bar. As a winemaker, curiosity got the better of me.
“This would taste so much better with alcohol.”
Not because it needed to be stronger — because it had the foundations of something special. Lightly sparkling. Low in sugar, low in calories. Naturally relaxing. Add a touch of alcohol, and it became a drink you could enjoy all afternoon without feeling weighed down.
We mixed a few cocktails for the four of us.
Then our friends wanted one.
Before long, the entire wedding was drinking them.
People weren't drinking faster. They weren't drinking more. They were simply enjoying themselves — relaxed, social, full of laughter. It felt different.

I couldn't stop thinking about that day. For the next year, I tried to convince myself it wasn't a business. I looked for every reason it wouldn't work. Surely someone else would do it. Surely there was a flaw I hadn't seen.
Eventually, I stopped looking for reasons not to do it.
As a winemaker, I've spent my career understanding flavour, fermentation, and how people experience what they drink. But I've always believed the best beverages are about more than what's in the glass. They're about where they take you, and who you're sharing them with.
OYA became my opportunity to build something that reflected that belief — a premium botanical spritzer inspired by South African ingredients, made for people who love long lunches, mountain sunsets, beach days, weddings, campfires, and conversations that last longer than planned.
It isn't just about what's in the can. It's about slowing down, looking up, and making time for the people and places that matter most.
